PhD/Master's - Student Research Opportunities
The Atlantic Shark Institute’s research model is unique and provides dedicated, diligent PhD and Master's candidates with the opportunity to conduct, complete and publish their research in collaboration with the ASI and their accredited U.S. College or University.
Research projects may be developed by the student in conjunction with their advisor (pending approval from the Atlantic Shark Institute), or they can be part of an ongoing ASI project with existing data that requires a researcher
to complete the project and lead it to publication.
Perhaps best of all, approved candidates will receive a $10,000 grant from the Atlantic Shark Institute, five free acoustic tags annually (or the equivalent), access to nearly 20 ASI research vessels at no cost, as well as all necessary chum, bait and equipment to conduct their research.
"The ASI was a perfect partner in my PhD research. They provided expertise, assistance, hands on help, boats, equipment and more. If you need to complete a Masters or PhD project on sharks, and want to work with truly good people, I could not recommend them more highly.”
– Dr. Brooke Anderson

Working with the Atlantic Shark Institute provides the following opportunities for research.
Project Funding and Resources
Admitted researchers will receive $10,000 in grant funding per project and five acoustic tags annually (or the financial equivalent), at no cost for the approved project.
Offshore Vessel Access
Researchers will have access to 20 ASI research vessels in RI, CT, and parts of MA and NH, free of charge, to facilitate research in these areas.
ASI Volunteer Network
Collaborate with our network of commercial, charter and private partners, who engage with sharks daily and can provide valuable support for your research.
Non-profit status perks:
As a federally recognized 501(c)(3), the ASI can accept grant money on your behalf, if that is of interest to you and your advisor. While not required or expected, the ASI retains only a small percentage of the funds for overhead, leaving the majority of the grant funds for your research. We have had former students take advantage of this model, and it remains an option for you and your advisor to consider.
